Should school child be limited on the hours of watching TV program and movie?

It is being argued whether school children should be restricted on the hours for watching TV and movie. Some claim that children have undeniable rights to watch as many hours as they could, while others insist that over-watching brings more harm than benefits. As for me, the latter sounds more reasonable.

First of all, some minor benefits of free-watching include larger possibilities of acquiring information and thoughts. Since TV programs and movies cover every specific field, children are able to absorb information as well as ideas from a wide range of themes. For example, staying watching documentaries about the medieval Europe for a day, a junior middle student will definitely figure out how the ancient Rome had conquered other European countries or tribes. Also, another student might, upon four hours’ watching the talk shows conducted by Oprah Winfrey, have the chance to know about the road to celebrities’ success.

While students may obtain considerable information via hours’ enjoying those programs, I believe there are certain disadvantages if parents and teachers drift the young toward doing so. The more hours are spent on watching TV and movie, the less will be distributed to their normal study. Then, the gains in sticking to TV programs or films must be weight against the losses in reviewing or previewing school courses. Usually, every specific school lecture is highly focused, embracing elaborately designed topics and directions that will provide instant personal inspiration. In order to retain control of the evanescent inspiration, they have to chew it for certain hours, or even one or two days, which, on the other hand, interferes with seeing motion pictures or TV series. In contrast to broadly-themed programs, doubly-concentrated inspirations are relatively superior.

Another drawback of staying in front of the screen too long has to do with the programs themselves. The fact is that young children lack the very consciousness of self-control. Therefore, free-watching harbors the possibility that they are addicted to the stories and facts in lack of educational values. As a consequence, the habit of lavishing money will creep on those continuously exposed to programs highlighting consumption. Besides, hedonism is likely to take root in those keen on talk shows flowing with banters and bad jokes. Without a doubt, these, from a universal angle, seriously are poisonous to their ambitions to become talents competent for social construction.

Splendid TV-programs and movies are beneficial to children in some aspects, at least in that they know more about the world. However, long-time TV or movie watching curtails their precious time for crucial school study, while some programs popularize ideas that do harm to the young’s growing up. So it is better, if not the best method, to set the time limit.
